A Closer Look: The Moncaso 972 is surprisingly light weight and easy to remove from the product box. The size of the box presents an illusion of a rather hefty HTPC enclosure. The enclosure looks and feels as though no expense was spared when fabricating the entire chassis.
When comparing the Moncaso 972 to the 932, you can see that the two aren't very different in terms of size and design. A couple of simple bezel and internal chassis changes have been made. The chassis has received a more refined facade with smaller and softer features like the buttons and bezel. The bezel now has a cleaner, more unified look with less dramatic separation between controls, the screen, and access door.
The buttons and their functions appear to have received a little larger font making the text easier to see. Within the slim bezel door, you can also see that the black Card Reader is also much easier read as well. The card reader itself is now a separate peripheral as opposed to the hard wired design from the 932. Perhaps this has been changed to make replacement or changes easier.
The outside of the chassis is basically like the 932 Platinum. It's constructed from the most flawless aluminum materials seen to date. The chassis finish is utterly flawless and well machined throughout every nook and cranny. Even the side chassis fan vents are perfectly buffed down to match. Great attention to detail has been given to the outward presentation.
Turning the 972 around, you can see that the refinements continue. The black chassis tends to be the choice color for hiding wiring as well as making a chassis look that much nicer. Black is a hard color to beat when you want make things like the wires and busy back end of a HTPC look that much more invisible.
Opening the chassis reveals a couple small revisions mainly in reference to the 7" Touch Screens PCB cage. There's a little extra venting now as well as a smaller cage requiring less space from the bezel. The lower card reader component takes up less space underneath the HDD cage which allows better air flow. .
In terms of storage capacity, there are still two drive bays that can house four hard drives. With today's new drive capacities, that's 4TB and up depending on what you want. And in between and underneath each bay is the optical drive bay for your DVD player of choice.
Alas, there's still plenty of room for a full sized ATX or a Micro-ATX motherboard. The chassis has plenty of venting from the lid, sides, rear, and front. The vents are designed to move more than enough cool air where needed as well as moving the warm air out. Even the two rear mounted 80mm fans should help keep the warm air created by the motherboard and other components moving out.
