A Closer Look:

One really cool feature of the Kingwin F-35 hard drive enclosure is the way in which it opens and closes. While many (most) of the hard drive enclosures on the market are quite simply a pain in the a$$ to open and install the hard drive, the F-35 used a one screw system. You remove one screw and the entire back (spine) of the unit fold up to reveal a back door to slide in the hard drive. It's neat and easy. If it was tool-less it wouldn't been the ultimate design, but it's still pretty good as is compared to using 4 screws or so like many enclosures do.

Installation:

HDD Going In

HDD Secured

HDD Popped Out

Cables Connected

Firing It Up

We Have Power

Installation is as easy as lifting the spine of the unit and sliding it a hard drive and then pushing down the spine to secure the drive. Then fasten the screw and you're done. connect the cables and fire it up. As with pretty much every hard drive enclosure, it's easy peasy and anyone can do it in minutes.

Testing:

HD Tach 3.0

Sisoft Sandra Removable Storage Benchmark

Speeds are on par with the average external hard drive enclosure so no surprises there.

Conclusion:

I'll keep this conclusion short and sweet; I like it and I can recommend it to those looking for an external hard drive enclosure and like this design. With so many basic hard drive enclosures on the market today, it comes down to design 99% of the time. By the way, the small fan on the side of the F-35 did not light up nor was it noisy.

I'd like to thank Kingwin for sending in another quality product to VH for review. Kingwin has earned a good reputation with us and we hope to see that trend continue in the years to come.
